Donald Sultan (Born 1951) was born in Asheville, North Carolina. He’s one of the leading still life artists in America. He currently lives and works in New York. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Carolina, and also holds a Master of Fine arts degree from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago. Sultan decided to move to New York in 1975 and produced many pieces of artwork there. He had his first one-man show in 1977. It was very successful and since then, he has enjoyed a distinguished career as sculptor, printmaker, and painter. His work has placed him at the vanguard of contemporary art, and he is now best known for his ability to successfully merge a fresh, modern approach that is unique with the best of the artistic tradition of yesterday. His paintings fit into the criteria of a still life, but he describes them as first and foremost abstract.

The uniqueness of his compositions comprising of, huge pieces of flowers, dominoes fruit, and other objects, set against the unsettling, stark charcoal-black, large background, dominate the viewer. Sultan is best known for his fruit, flowers and lemons, and states that his subjects develop from previous work. What does not change with his art is the authoritative statement his forms make. The artist’s work incorporates organic forms and basic geometric with a formal purity that is both monumental and subtle. The images are massive, with equal stress on both positive and negative areas. His art is included in the permanent collection of many prestigious institutions.
