Fig & Melon Press was founded by Joseph DeLuca an artist and graphic designer based in Cleveland. The artist is as comfortable in front of his computer as he is behind the bar. That’s because he isn’t just an inspired designer of contemporary art for bar, kitchen, body and home, but is also one of the leading authorities on beverage programs and bartending in the region. He’s also part of the team responsible for the nation’s growing cocktail culture. Even though the hospitality industry provides his bread and butter, it is actually design that he loves most and its design that feeds his soul. When he combines these two ingredients, the result is a buffet of creative output. His works include wine-label design, restaurant branding and logos, and menu design. He’s the artist who did work for James Beard Award of Cleveland that was won by Chef Michael Symon. He’s also done a series of original, delightful posters.
His art is inspired by everything from vintage kitchen appliances to classic cocktails and they are seasoned with whimsy. The artist traces back his creative free enterprise to his early days as producer and founder of Meat Circus, a performance art troupe. Since then, DeLuca has gone on to design work spaces, bars and furniture in collaboration with some of the leading woodworkers. He creates art installations for restaurants; and is always working hand in hand with his wife Sheila Weil who’s also an artist. He proposes, manages and designs many public art projects in Lakewood, Ohio which is his hometown.
