Barbara Zaring Wall Art

Barbara Zaring (Born 1947) was born in Zanesville, Ohio, and raised in Cambridge, Ohio. She was educated at DePauw University, Greencastle, Indiana, where she graduated in 1969 with a BA in Fine Art. She also studied at Drew University, New Jersey, and at Pratt Printmaking Institute, New York, in 1968 and in 1970 respectively. After working in Manhattan for more than a year, designing showrooms and offices, she went to Europe, studying and traveling independently for close to a year. Upon returning to the United States, she taught elementary art for one year. At this point in life, she needed to find a place of her own, and she set out on a cross-country trip. Barbara arrived at Taos, New Mexico, and immediately knew she had found a place to call home. However, she continued on to California and spent one year teaching at an outdoor school there, in the mountains above Los Angeles.

She finally settled in Taos in 1973 and started working on a series of multi-colored woodcut prints which she soon exhibited in Total Arts Gallery. She continues to show there to this date. While she had a degree in Fine Art, Barbara had never previously painted landscape. Rather unexpectedly, she began to go outside to paint the landscape with her friend, Alyce Frank. Previously, most of her interest had been in conceptual art or abstract. However, she fell in love with the Land of Taos County, and she’s now in her 25th year of exploring and painting it. Her first exhibition was in 1979 at the Stables Gallery. She showed only the woodcuts at that time, but her next show at that same gallery featured both prints and oil paintings.
