Christo (Javacheff) Wall Art

Christo (Javacheff) (Born 1935) is a Bulgarian artist known in the professional circles simply as Christo. He’s a controversial 'environmental artist who was born in Gabrovo, Bulgaria. From 1952 to 1956, Christo studied stage design and sculpture at the Sofia academy of fine arts, and spent a semester at the 'Kunstakademie' (Vienna), where he was introduced to the movement of Russian Constructivism. In 1958, he moved to Paris where he produced his first wrapped objects and packages: stacks of magazines, chairs, and bundles of everyday items. Three years later, he began working on large-scale projects, and managed to hold his first solo-exhibition. After awhile his projects took on environmentally large-scale magnitude. Since the 1990s, the artist has been working together with his wife. In 1994, the couple received the approval of the German parliament for a project to wrap the Reichstag building. They worked on this project between June and July 1995.

Christo and his wife exclusively finance their projects through donations. They also sell sketches in order to remain independent from the public authorities and sponsors. The couple lives together in New York. In 1956 when the Hungarian uprising of broke out, the artist managed to move to Austria and studied art in Vienna, Austria briefly, and then moved to Paris in 1958 after a short stay in Switzerland. In Paris, he met a group of artists who used everyday events and objects as the subjects of their work and he supported himself by painting. The group included Yves Klein, Daniel Spoerri, Arman, and Jean Tinguely.
